You should

  • Not smoke or consume caffeine for at least 30mins before taking readings.
  • Avoid eating, exercising, or taking medication beforehand.
  • Avoid measuring your blood pressure if you need to use the toilet.
  • Not wear tight or restrictive clothing around your arm.

How to take your Blood Pressure

  1. Your blood pressure cuff should fit your arm properly or else it may give inaccurate readings. It should wrap snugly around your upper arm, with just enough space to slide two fingertips underneath. If your arm is particularly larger or smaller than average, you may need to buy a different sized cuff separately.
  2. You should rest for at least 5-10 minutes before measuring your blood pressure, by sitting down in a quiet place to relax and try to avoid talking to anyone.
  3. Measure your blood pressure while sitting comfortably upright, with your arm supported and with both feet on the ground without talking or crossing legs/arms.
  4. Measure your blood pressure in both arms. If there is a consistent difference of more than 15mmHg then always use the arm with the higher reading.
  5. Put the cuff on your upper arm (5cm above your elbow) and rest your arm on the table. The cuff should be roughly at the same level of your heart.
  6. Record your blood pressure morning and evening for 7 consecutive days. Each time, take three readings, at least a minute apart, and record the lowest readings
