Under the Choose & Book service patients can choose where and when they want to be seen when being referred for further investigation or treatment by their GP.  Patients can choose to attend any hospital in England which holds a contract with the NHS (including some private hospitals for certain specialities).  Choose and Book is an electronic booking service where you can choose the venue, time and date of your appointment, either on the internet or over the phone.

If your GP feels a referral is appropriate he may offer to refer you using the Choose & Book system if the speciality is available on the Choose & Book system.  Your doctor will give you a document with your unique booking number and password to enable you to make your appointment.  Occasionally your GP may  be able to book the appointment at the time of your consultation.
